7 ton Gunpowder Van, Caledonian Railway No.57

7 ton Gunpowder Van, Caledonian Railway No.57

Built 1922 by Hurst, Nelson & Co., Motherwell.
SRPS Core Collection, on display, CR red livery.

The body of this van is steel, lined internally with wood as a precaution against sparks. Gunpowder, cordite, TNT and dynamite were important materials used in munitions, mining and in the construction industry. Carriage of explosives on trains hauled by steam locomotives required some care.

This van ended its days as a calcium carbide store at Townhill Wagon Works, Fife.
