This wagon has vacuum-braked 'MINFIT' 8 shoe clasp tread brakes and self contained buffers, so that it can run at higher speeds. The bauxite livery is reserved for wagons fitted with continuous brake. The diagonal stripe at one end indicates the location of the end door. Wagons could be unloaded labouriously by hand, or more quickly on wagon tipplers which tipped wagons on their end or side so as to discharge the load. This was only really suitable if a wagon had roller bearings. If, like this one, it had oil axleboxes, the oil would run out when tippled, and a member of staff had to be on hand to refill the boxes.
