This wagon was part of a programme to run heavier trains, yet not exceed loop lengths. The type normally operated on power station, steel works or industrial user block workings - the forerunners of today's "Merry-Go-Round" trains. Some coal merchants did accept these larger wagons despite the difficulty in unloading by hand.
