14 ton Tank Wagon, Briggs No.20

Built 1918 by Hurst Nelson, Motherwell.
SRPS Core Collection, Briggs Dundee, black.
Steel frames, tank heating coils.

The tank incorporates heating coils, necessary to warm the heavy fuel oil that the Navy used for bunkering its ships. The steel frames and oil axle boxes show developments which made tank wagons fit for high speed use on main line railways.

This wagon is believed to have begun life as a "sister" to Naval Stores No.161 (also in the SRPS collection), later bought second-hand from the Government by William Briggs & Sons.
