This carriage was designed and ordered by the LMS, but actually completed by British Railways after nationalisation. The body skin is sheet steel, and its clean lines are a marked contrast to its predecessors of twenty or thirty years earlier. Internally, it is laid out as an open saloon, an approach first tried by the LMS in the 1920s. As such, it looks forward to British Railways own standard designs and to the modern age, rather than back to compartment stock.
The type operated on Scotland's former LMS main lines, such as those from Glasgow to Ayr, Perth and Aberdeen. It has some interesting contemporary features, such as pull-down sinks in the toilets.
This coach is out of use pending replacement of the steel body skin, damaged when the coach was stored out of doors.
